Anno Design
On a busy Westerstraat street, where every Monday markets are held, and
across from the nearby Noordermarkt with its biological food market
open each Saturday, a small furniture design shop called Anno has two
modest locations where it proposes a selection of modern Dutch design
pieces. You will also find there fresh furniture and accessories by
Kartell, Artek, Tecta and Magis. The whole collection is brand new,
modern and light, prices are reasonable. There are always at Anno Design
some good chairs, tables and lamps. If you are tired of vintage, or
your budget is tight, this is your design furniture shop.

BeBoB Design Rich collection of the post World War II vintage furniture by most important international designers as Eames, Jacobsen, Le Corbusier, Gispen, Gray and Starck. Only a small part of this incredible assembly is exhibited in the store. BeBoB collection counts in thousands and is most likely bigger than the design furniture collection of several important worlds’ museums. Its owner Casey Godrie sells also vintage authentic lamps by the world’s 20th Century designers. If you are a collector and you look for any particular piece, please consult their website. Location: Herenstraat 8, (Jordaan area) Website: www.bebob.nl Droog One of the two stores of the Droog design firm (the other is in Las Vegas), known for its often-unusual ideas. Droog (meaning in Dutch: dry) creates products and works on a larger design projects with offices in Amsterdam and New York. The store was co-founded in 1993 by a Dutch woman critic and curator Renny Ramakers who remains its director. American weekly Newsweek has included Ramakers in 2012, in the Top 150 most influential women of the world (‘fearless women who shake the world’). You will find in Droog many funny objects of everyday usage by international designers. Location: Staalstraat 7b (between Waterlooplein and the Munt) Website: www.droog.com Fens Décor More a choice of decoration objects and rare furniture pieces than a design shop, nevertheless the selection of the Fens Décor is at all times original, objects carefully selected and the whole atmospheres of the shop truly exquisite. Pieces of art and a wide choice of French Jieldé lamps, which may be ordered according to your wishes, complete the exhibit. Jean-Louis Domecq who designed his unique often also called Standard or Signal lamps at the end of the 1940’s, passed away in 1983, but the company named from his initials is led now led by his daughter and Jieldé lamps still produced in many colors, sizes and versions. Fens Décor is open only on Saturday, together with the nearby Farmers Market on the Noordermarkt or upon appointment. Do not miss it. Location: Prinsengracht 12 (Jordaan area) Website: www.fensdecor.nl Friday Next A concept store and a small café with a very good coffee: Friday Next has been established in 2012 by Esther Blaffert and Paulien de Vries. It concentrates on young Dutch design, but some objects are by the modern designers from other countries. Location: Overtoom 31 (nearby Vondelpark) Website: www.fridaynext.com SPRMRKT A former supermarket is today a spacious 450 sq. meters garage store offering mixture of most modern conceptual clothing and shoes, selected vintage pieces of design furniture and small objects. Fashion brands include: Avelon, Aviatic, Barbara Bologna, Barbara I Gongini, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Costa' Noir, Helmut Lang, Ilaria Nistri, Individuals, Kim Stumpf, Monique Van Heistand. Interesting atmosphere, good music around and unusual pieces of clothing and bags. Also a selection of distinctive conceptual magazines and books. If not for the prices, you would buy most of their stuff. Location: Rozengracht 191 (Jordaan area) Website: www.sprmrkt.nl The Frozen Fountain This large almost 700 sq. meters shop full of objects from all over Europe is like labyrinth. It proclaims to sell “Furniture. Fabrics. Home accessories. Arts.” and it is probably the most complete modern design shop in Amsterdam working also as an agent for the designers and carrying out the design projects on its own. Initially established on another location in 1985 by Dick Dankers, the shop grew through partnership with Cok de Rooy. Located since 1992 in two townhouses at Prinsengracht it presents a selection of Dutch design objects along with the furniture produced by big international firms as Vitra. Many smaller objects are on show in the display cabinets. Location: Prinsengracht 645 (Leidsestraat area) Website: www.frozenfountain.nl Galerie RA Contemporary jewelry, vessels, small objects and accessories. Established in 1976 by Paul Derrez (1950), a colorful figure in the Amsterdam art world with impeccable taste. A talented designer himself, Derrez made of RA not only an exciting modern jewelry store, but also a whole research art center organizing exhibits, editing publications, lecturing and writing. Location: Nes 120 (nearby Dam square) Website: www.galerie-ra.nl Galerie Rob Koudijs A small quiet gallery located at the busy Jordaan street. The gallery specializes in modern hand made art jewelry. Rob Koudijs, who since 30 years is active in art gallery world, runs it. Interesting, well-presented theme exhibitions change every six weeks. Location: Elandsgracht 12 (Jordaan area) Website: www.galerierobkoudijs.nl Hans Appenzeller Dutch modern jewelry designer Hans Appenzeller (1949) opened his shop in 1974. Meant as the presentation of his oeuvre, starting from the beginning of his career, the shop displays also new pieces often made from innovative materials as steel, aluminum, glass and rubber. Truly original and innovative work. Location: Grimburgwal 1 (side street off the Rokin) Website: www.appenzeller.nl Hudson River American design objects of the 1960-ties, vintage pieces of design furniture and contemporary ceramics by Jacob Raeder, US artist residing in Amsterdam, are the most interesting items on sale at Hudson River, a design and decorative objects shop in the Jordaan. The place is run by a pair of American expats who ship each month from the US all kind of bric-à-brac: old license plates, vintage advertising boards, Amish tin barn stars, old toys and design ceramics. Location: Eerste Egelantiersdwarsstraat 2 (Jordaan area) Website: www.hudsonriver.nl De Kastoor / Wonen 2000 De Kastoor exists now for hundred years. Established as a furniture shop, it is today the most complete design furniture store, known for its excellent customer service. It has a big showroom on several floors of two buildings, where one is a former syrup factory, with all important world’s design brands represented - just to name the part of the selection: Ahrend, Alessi, Alinea, Arco, Artemide, Artifort, B&B Italia, Barcelona Design, Cappelini, Carl Hansen, Cerruti Baleri, Danskina, Driade, Droog, Fontana Arte, Foscarini, Fritz Hansen, Giorgetti, Ingo Maurer, Kartell, Knoll, Ligne Roset, MDF Italia, Minotti, Montis, Moooi, Pastoe, Richard Lampert, Stelton, Thonet, Vitra, Wittmann. De Kastoor offers a professional interior design help and has an on-line shop. De Kastoor closed in 2014 its shop at Rozengracht. Their showroom is located now in the new area called Ijbrug in North Amsterdam. Location: Pand Design020, Pedro de Medinalaan 89-91; 1086 XP Amsterdam-IJburg Website: www.dekastoor.nl Moooi showroom ‘Mooi’ means in Dutch ‘beautiful’, but in the name of the store there one ‘o’ too many. Exaggeration is a trademark of this huge and beautiful 700 sq. meters showroom exhibiting Marcel Wanders (1963) exciting designs along with objects and furniture by several other contemporary designers collaborating with Wanders. All is new, interesting, and fun to see. Moreover, as all these objects are oversized, unusual and expensive, the visit to Moooi while unlikely to end in shopping will be certainly inspiring. Location: Westerstraat 187 (Jordaan area) Website: www.moooi.com Nordic New A modern, bright and almost transparent shop with everything novel - lamps, small furniture pieces and small objects designed in Great Britain (Tom Dixon), Scandinavia (Asplund, Design House, Filippa K, Pia Wallen, SMD and Wästberg from Sweden; Artek, Ittala, Minus Tio and Muuto from Finland; Rosendahl from Denmark) and the Netherlands (Tord Boontje). Very good choice in one clean aesthetic direction. Also American radios by Tivoli Audio. Prices are moderated and Nordic New offers the Best Price Guarantee promising to refund the difference in price of any object purchased in case another shop in Amsterdam offers it for the lower price. Along the vintage 1950’s and 1960’s pieces, there are modern certified re-editions and well as limited editions of furniture by modern Dutch designers. The accent is of course on wood and its modern usage.
